LOLLEY READY FOR AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Sydney FC winger Joe Lolley has declared himself fully fit for the Sky Blues’ AFC Champions League Two clash against Bangkok United on Wednesday night, after battling a hip problem during his side’s 3-3 draw with the Wanderers over the weekend.

Lolley had a quieter outing in the A-League derby at Allianz Stadium, where he slipped on the turf early in the match, injuring his hip. However, he quickly bounced back and is now ready for the high-stakes fixture.

“I was a bit sore in my hip joint when I slipped over, so I need to make sure I wear the correct footwear – that’s what I learnt,” Lolley explained. “I had a few knocks during the game, but I’m all good now, and ready and available.”

Lolley’s return to full fitness is a welcome boost for Sydney FC as they look to gain an advantage in the first leg of their AFC Champions League round-of-16 tie. The Thai side Bangkok United, who sit second in the Thai Premier League, will be a tough opponent, and the Sky Blues are keen to start strong at home before heading into the away leg next week.

“We know, especially going away, with the travel and the hot and humid weather over there, it’s always tougher in the away game, so we want to get off to a good start and stamp our authority on the tie,” said Lolley. “We want to go as far as possible in Asia. It’s a big competition for us and a chance to get some silverware.”

Lolley acknowledged the team’s recent form, admitting they will need to improve in several areas following their draw with the Wanderers, which saw Sydney score two late goals to level the match.

“I don’t think we were at our best. We obviously finished the game really well, but we need to stop conceding so many goals and giving away as many chances as we do,” he said.

Meanwhile, Central Coast Mariners are preparing for their final two AFC Champions League Elite fixtures, with a match against Malaysian club Johor Darul Ta’zim on Tuesday night. Although out of contention for a knockout-stage spot, the Mariners are determined to end their campaign on a high.

“We want to get six points from our last two games,” said Mariners captain Trent Sainsbury.

For both teams, the upcoming matches in the AFC Champions League will be pivotal in their push for pride and success in Asia.
